The Westcountry Rivers Trust is one of the UK’s most active and exciting environmental charities and is the largest of the growing movement of Rivers Trusts across the UK and Ireland. We look for motivated, self-reliant people who are able to lead and inspire others and, eventually, design and fund their own role in line with our charitable objectives. If you feel you are one of these special people then we currently have a vacancy in our fisheries team.

Reporting to the Head of Fisheries and the Trust Director, duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Traditional river surveys and fisheries surveys (electrofishing).
  • Assistance with aquaculture facility management and operation.
  • Design and management of small and medium scale river restoration projects including contractor liaison, volunteer coordination and licensing.
  • Analyse data and record on a GIS platform.
  • River water quality assessment through direct measurement and biomonitoring techniques.
  • Experimental design and report writing.
  • Press and public liaison.
  • Supervision of research activities.
The Trust undertakes large European research projects and participation in these would be required. The advertised post will be largely funded through an international research project so integration into the project partnership at a senior level will be required; language skills would be useful: French, Spanish and/or Portuguese.

The Trust liaises with many regional and national groups including fishing associations, public sector groups and other conservation NGO’s. We would expect the successful candidate to maintain and develop these relationships.

The trust communicates with the public on many levels through different media so good communication and computer skills will be essential.

Please Send a CV and covering letter with two proposed references to Dr Dylan Bright, Trust Director.
